As a film director I lead teams of creatives and guide the evolution of an idea from inception to release. This includes working with writers, guiding the script through development; enhancing story, structure and character. It means laying out the creative vision of the film, guiding the aesthetic, collaborating with the director of photography on format, lenses, look and feel. I scout, photograph and approve locations, oversee the design and layout of builds —leading the art department to create the world the story and the characters inhabit.
I understand how to cultivate emotion in performance and how it creates impression —working with actors, affirming motivation, creating space for individual expression, character nuance, and calibrating emotional intensity.
I choreograph the blocking of actors and camera, finessing movement, selecting point of view and equipment, guiding pace, tempo, intimacy and energy. I strive to elicit emotional response in audiences —to create a consciousness that guides the experience.
I oversee a diverse group of post production teams and facilities. I’m hands on with the edit and work unrelenting towards picture lock. I guide the post production workflow, overseeing the breakdown of visual effects and their integration into the timeline. I work closely with the colorist and director of photography on the grade, guiding the overall aesthetic and approving final corrections, frame by frame. I work with composers, directing the style and feel of music, and work in studio providing direction on the final mix and sound design.
I believe strongly in having a vision —that success is built in preparation, and improved upon during production. I also understand the value of intuition and work to carve out room for individual creative expression in all departments.
I believe that art and commerce are not mutually exclusive, and remain hands on during marketing; cutting trailers, providing conceptual direction and feedback on posters and materials.
I enjoy a variety of artistic mediums and actively seek out new forms of storytelling and expression. I’m fluent in photography and experienced in short form commercial content. I’m constantly seeking out new methods of impactful visual storytelling and always looking for the next opportunity.
My films have premiered at festivals, been distributed through studios including Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Columbia TriStar, and broadcast on networks such as HBO Canada, The Movie Network, Freeform (formerly ABC Family) and AMC. I work with agencies and have directed national spots airing on CBC.
I’ve been nominated for 6 Alberta Film and Television awards and directed the winning “Best Actress” performance in 2018, for Julie Orton’s portrayal of Claire Saint in Everfall.
